Workshop on FAIR data for ASSEMBLE Plus partners and marine stations

FAIR data: Good Data Management for Long-term Biological and Omics Datasets from Marine Stations

This workshop is open to all staff from ASSEMBLE Plus partner institutes and their marine biological stations, and is aimed at those working with long-term biological and omics datasets. The purpose of this workshop is

  • To introduce concepts and applications of the FAIR data principles
  • To improve skills to realise virtual access to data resources in general
  • To improve skills to realise virtual access to long-term biological data series
  • To introduce data management approaches for creating data publications of data generated by Genomic Observatories

Via demonstrations and hands-on sessions we will take you through the steps that are necessary to make your data FAIR:

  • Findable: make your data easily findable online
  • Accessible: ensure your data can be easily and automatically accessed online
  • Interoperable: make your data easy for others to operable on
  • Reusable: ensure the re-use conditions and licences are clear, aiming always for Open Access

What we can do for you

This workshop is part of the ASSEMBLE Plus task NA2 (Imroving virtual access to marine biological stations data, information, and knowledge), and it is intended to help our marine stations fulfill the requirements of this task. We can help you

  • Improve the data records for your station's datasets, making them as FAIR as possible – your historical long-term biological datasets, your current datasets, and putting the practises in place for your future datasets!
  • Learn how to standardise the data formats for your datasets and how to perform quality control on them. If you have been wanting to know the best way to make a dataset machine-readable so it can be accessed via R scripts and webservices, bring your data with you and we will show you how to do that!
  • Learn how to create a data publication; create one while at the workshop!

Reaching us and Staying in Ostend

VLIZ (Vlaams Instituute voor de Zee in Dutch, or Flanders Marine Institute in English) is in Ostend (aka Oostende), in exotic Belgium. VLIZ is easily reached from Ostend hotels via a short (free and frequent) ferry ride from the harbour on the edge of the centre of town, or a slighly longer tram+walk or cycle. Bikes can be hired at the train station and parked at VLIZ (the route passes along the industrial harbour and is very safe, with a separated bike lane all the way)

Ostend is on a direct train line from Brussels airport: see the NMBS site for train schedules and to buy tickets online (highly recommended if you are likely to be in a hurry).

For more information about Ostend and its hotels, visit its tourist site. June is the beginning of the holiday season and we recommend early booking of your hotel.
